Finnish health tech company Gosta Labs is working with Europe’s most powerful supercomputer LUMI to develop specialized language models for social and healthcare services. The first models developed with the supercomputer located in Kajaani are already deployed in the company’s AI assistant, Gosta Aide. The solution automates patient and client documentation, reducing the administrative workload for healthcare professionals while the collaboration reinforces the company’s high standards of data privacy as well as the European AI expertise.

Alleviating the Burden of Administrative Tasks

A survey commissioned by the Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health last October revealed that healthcare professionals spend an average of 3 hours and 15 minutes each day recording various kinds of information. This amounts to a considerable portion of the workday for those providing care, during which the most important task should be interacting with patients.

Gosta Labs’ AI assistant, Gosta Aide, employs bespoke, task-specific language models to generate patient and client documentation quickly, efficiently, and securely. The first models are already in active use in both Finland and Switzerland.

“Many AI solutions rely on large, closed language models. However, understanding the entire training process, along with data protection and performance — especially from the perspective of European healthcare — is critical to addressing the needs of local healthcare systems,” says Lauri Sippola, CEO and co-founder of Gosta Labs.

Leveraging LUMI’s Computing Power

Developing and training large language models requires significant computational power. Gosta Labs naturally turned to the LUMI supercomputer in Kajaani that also happens to be the most powerful in Europe. LUMI is operated by the IT Center for Science CSC.

“In the first phase, we have trained several task-specific machine learning models for healthcare, which are utilized in the core functionalities of our product. These models can be run practically in any environment, and they are clearly more resource-efficient and higher performing than the large models we previously used for similar tasks. We have also developed capabilities to make the models available in multiple languages,” says Gosta Labs’ CPO and co-founder, Henri Viertolahti.

The project is funded by Business Finland, whose support launched the LUMI collaboration in the spring of 2024. Additionally, in the fall of 2024, Gosta Labs raised EUR 1.2 million in pre-seed funding to accelerate broader development and international expansion, as well as to better serve the needs of social and healthcare services in Finland.”

Real-World Impact on Healthcare

Gosta Aide is currently in use at multiple organizations, public and private, providing both primary and specialized healthcare in Finland and Switzerland. For example, the collaboration with the Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County LUVN has been featured in e.g. Helsingin Sanomat.

Already, the solution has been shown to significantly reduce the time healthcare professionals spend on administration and decrease variations in documentation practices. User feedback is promising: Gosta Aide has reportedly saved time and improved both job satisfaction and interaction with patients helping to bring the focus back on care.

The Importance of Finnish and European LLMs in the Future

Next, Gosta Labs plans to continue developing new task-specific models while also making multiple language versions available. The team is continuously developing new capabilities, one example being the automated capture of clinical outcomes data in social and healthcare processes.

“Developing AI expertise here in Finland is an opportunity for the whole AI scene in Europe,” summarizes Lauri Sippola. “While our locally developed language models ultimately serve social care and healthcare, we believe they also enhance Europe’s overall competitiveness in AI.”
